BREAKING NEWS: CLASHES IN S LEBANON

Little information is yet available, but one has to worry of a large scale operation given PIJ's operation in Israel today and now clashes with Hizballah. Perhaps an operation against Syria is in the works? I hope note. The mistakes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon aside, we remain united at heart with our Syrian brothers. Lets wait and see... but from events unfolding today...one cannot but feel worried about the future of our Lebanon...

My belief: There is no such thing as "brotherhood" in politics, but the interests of the two peoples almost always converge. The problem has always been in the regimes in both countries.

Firas, please spare us the jeremiads of brotherhood. Brothers don't do brothers the way Syria has done us for the past 80 years of our statehood (yes my rancor/memory goes much deeper than a mere 30-year occupation.) I don't want to mete out punishment on Syria! But at the same time, I lend a hand (literal and allegorical) to people and things that are worth the time of day. Syria is a brutal totalitarian contamination. The sooner it dissolves, the sooner our Syrian neignbors will be free. Kindly stop propping up and nurturing the beast.

I'm sorry Firas, I went back and re-read your (sorry) silly comment "The mistakes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon aside, we remain united at heart with our Syrian brothers" and couldn't believe my freaking eyes! Are you for real! I mean, I've been reading your comments for a while, and up until now you sounded like a reasonably intelligent and reasoned fellow, but is this for real??? Are you trying to blunt and sanitize the crimes that Syria has committed in Lebanon??? That's all they amount to you?? "Mistakes???" That's the only way you're capable of describing Syria's atrocities? Negligeable blunders? No, sorry, gaffes??? C'mon, friend! Fake humanism and neighborly solidarity aside, Syria is a criminal state that has been sending your TRUE LEBANESE BROTHERS to the Damascene auto-da-fe for the past 30 years, and you are advocating that we stand in solidarity "united at heart" with this scourge? this pyromaniacal band of criminals, pirates and kleptomaniacs????... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??? I say slay the Syrian beast, and the sooner it is done away with, the better it is for us and the rest of our neighborhood.
Wake up and smell the baraazi2, Firas!

I'm sorry Doha, but semantics are EVERYTHING in politics! Don't get me wrong, I love and deeply appreciate Firas' (always insightful) contributions! But this "brotherhood" thing struck me as irresponsible, mendacious, and frankly out of character... and i'm an off the cuff kinda gal who never dwells on lapses like this one. Didn't mean to upset or offend; just wanted you folks to know that I'm here and grateful for what you do! And i'm sure it wouldn't help you one bit if I were all flattery and didn't nit pick when I should.
Voilà, c'est tout pour l'instant!
Grosses bises à tous!

Wow! Give the guy a break! Samir Kassir died because he was starting to look towards the welfare of the Syrian people. And I believe Firas made a very good distinction between the brothers and the regime.

Like it or not, guys and "gals", our roots with the Syrians converge not too long ago. Plus, the same government/regime we hate is persecuting its own people as well. AND, everyone is entitled to their own oppinions. Some of us feel empathy for the Syrians, and others would like to punish them for the mistakes of their dictator.

Can the latters leave the formers empathize in peace, without insulting them??
Thanks!

One last note: we would be majorly affected if there is an attack on Syria.

Firas, point well taken! Thanks for the clarification.
Anonymous, what's up with "gals" in quotations? What am I, a mirage, or a vagary to earn the quotations??? Plus, I think I was very clear that my beef was not with the Syrian people! I have nothing but affection for the wretched of this earth, be they Syrians, Americans, Palestinians, or Israelis.

Ok guys,

We all want to be careful, I try to be see my PS to my last post on my blog.

However, sorry Firas, I stand by my comment "mindless". This thing has become a reflex with some people, and LWB is right: words and ideas matter.

We have oodles problems to solve in Lebanon, and the subject right here, we can discuss in depth WITHOUT making useless reference to "botherhood".

Whether you like it or not, the word feeds into all sort of BAD things, namely the "right" of brothers to interfere in our business. Enough of that (I know it is not what Firas meant)

"Arab brother" has become as meaningless as "zionist entity" and other code words which do not enhance debate, tick people off, and cloud the issues.

I will be very happy to care about my "brothers" AFTER I have solved my own problems, and AFTER I have gotten a little more than empty words from my "brothers", governmnet AND people.
