Especially with regards to the third paragraph.

But the realist (or maybe the pessimist?) says to me that providing basic human rights isn't enough.

Discrimination (whether by religion or race) is a function of perception. How does the saying go? But equal rights means the diminishing of some rights for group X and increase of rights for group Y ... the main problem with this is the "diminishing" part.Lazarushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05388532206190051913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10968421.post-1126413762548395872005-09-10T23:42:00.000-05:002005-09-10T23:42:00.000-05:00Haha, I can bear witness that AUB engineering did ...Haha, I can bear witness that AUB engineering did not ruin Hassan's social life ... maybe the army did, but definitely not engineering :DLazarushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05388532206190051913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10968421.post-1126409260651013392005-09-10T22:27:00.000-05:002005-09-10T22:27:00.000-05:00With regards to Lebanon's "Arab identity," i perci...With regards to Lebanon's "Arab identity," i percieve that there is an "identity crisis."

Traditionally, the Sunni political elite have claimed to represent the Arab identity more than any other sectarian elite in the country. You can see that today with the way Sa'ad and Future TV always refer to Hariri Sr. as not only a Lebanese Martyr but an "Arab" Martyr.

The irony here is that Hizballah is now laying claim to representing the "Arab" cause in Lebanon by insisting on holding on to its arms in the face of "Israeli belligerance." Again, the irony here is particularly sweet, especially considering the traditional Shi'a revultion towards the so-called Arab cause, which has justified countless massacres and lesser political crimes against communities and individuals who happen to be Shi'a.

Jumblatt appears to be telling the Hariri clan that Sa'ad will not get away with claiming to represent Arab interests without remaining in a state of war against Israel. As you mentioned, Hassan, the issue is Hizballah's arms, and the Arab (more acurately, Iranian) conflict against Israel.Rajahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02625042447499335907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10968421.post-1126402387216117952005-09-10T20:33:00.000-05:002005-09-10T20:33:00.000-05:00Hassan, ruining your social life has been an honor...Hassan, ruining your social life has been an honor for me. I'm very flattered that I actually beat the Army and Engineering at AUB.
